Waterloo - The Clippers Swim Club had 27 members compete at the
2010 Huronia Region LC Championships.
The team managed to get well over 70 percent best times. Gold medal winners were Marian Cooper in the
100m breaststroke, Liesbeth Froentjes in the 100m freestyle and Melodie
O'Connell in the 800m freestyle. Cooper
also three silver medals in the 200m breaststroke, 200m IM and the 400m IM,
while Froentjes achieved silver in the 200m freestyle and 100m butterfly, plus
two bronze in the 50m freestyle and 200m IM.
O'Connell also attained a bronze in the 100m butterfly.
Amber Champion grabbed
silver in the 100m freestyle, 100m and 200m backstroke, plus a bronze in the
200m freestyle. Carly Foubert took home
the silver in the 400m IM, while Trevor Langford earned the silver in the 800m
freestyle. Larkin Casey earned two
bronze medals in the 50m and 100m breaststroke. Sebastian Carrasco and Ben Cuthbert each attained a bronze medal
in the 200m butterfly and 100m breaststroke respectively. Clippers who achieved 100 percent best times
were Molly Bouchard, Larkin Casey, Anneke Froentjes, Teda Froentjes, Jason
Langford, Trevor Langford, Alex Marshall, Heidi Ohrling, Julia Simpson and
Rachel Simpson.
Other Clippers who attended were
Lexie Ausrotas, Alexander Carrasco, Emily Cuthbert, Amy Foubert, Avila Holland,
Kirsten McFarlane, Lauren Mills, Nicole Rennie, Madison Whitton and Emma
Woodhouse. A dozen Clippers also
competed in Buffalo last month. It was
neat to see the athletes race against some American competition. The club also hosted a small meet in
Orangeville at the beginning of May where 50 Clippers participated. The club is really looking forward to the
possibility of a new six lane, 25 metre pool to avoid having to go out of town
to hold meets in the non warm months.
The Clippers host their 18th
Annual Outdoor Swim Meet on June 19th and 20th at the
newly renovated Centennial Pool. Teams
from all across Ontario will be coming to town for the competition. The swim club encourages everyone to come
down and check out the action!
Sascha Keir is ranked 5th
in Canada in the recently published Swim News magazine. Amber Champion was named to the Huronia
Region Summer Games Swim Team along with Ben Cuthbert, who unfortunately had to
decline due to other commitments.
Brandon Oates was also named Head Coach of the team, which includes
athletes from Barrie, Orillia, Peterborough, Muskoka, Owen Sound and Port
Elgin. The Clippers wrap up their
season in July with Long Course Provincial Championships. Next season begins in September and the club
will have limited space, but will welcome new recruits!
